Stripping Semi-Permanent Hair Color?

Okay so I helped my friend dye his hair dark for a show that he's in. He has naturally very light blond hair, and we used semi-permanent Clairol Nice 'n' Easy Darkest Brown (28-Wash) dye.

It turned out BLACK. Not brown like it was supposed to...BLACK.

Now, he's fine for the show (thankfully his director didn't kill him/me)...but does anyone have any advice for at least lightening the dye? We're college students so going to a salon is kind of out of the question...I've heard a lot about color stripping...how damaging is that? Is there a way to remove the color without bleaching, re-dying, or destroying his hair ?

Help would be greatly appreciated!

Get familiar with prell shampoo - or use the strongest shampoo you can find. Neutrogena is heavy in the detergent department....

put it on dry hair and let it sit for half an hour then wash....repeat as needed.

That helped me in the same boat

Go to the same section in the drug store that you purchased the hair color and look for hair color stripper. Its good that you used semi-permanent color, it will be easier to strip. If you go to dye his hair again, don't go with such a dark color. I would suggest if he wants brown hair, to go with a light brown color. You really are not supposed to go more than 2 shades lighter or darker than your normal hair color. If you do, it looks fake and well...colored. Because of his light hair and him not coloring his hair prior to this (I'm assuming) his hair grabbed the color, that is why it turned so dark.

How quickly do you need the colour out? Anti-dandruff shampoo will slowly strip/fade the colour out without damaging his hair, but it'll take a while!
